Abstract:
Many common diseases, including severe psychiatric disorders, are highly heritable. In the past 2 decades genome-wide association studies have identified numerous genetic variants associated with these disorders. These discoveries have enabled the calculation of polygenic risk scores to quantify the genetic susceptibility of individuals to develop common diseases. I will review the evolving methodologies for the calculation of polygenic risk scores, and the current status in the application of polygenic risk scores in clinical medicine and public health
