ICD-11 Classification of Mental Disorders and stretching the boundaries of psychiatry

The ICD-11 was finalized and published by WHO and is now expected to be a mandatory statistical tool

for reporting morbidity and mortality rates in all WHO Member States. The chapter of ICD-11 which

deals with mental and behavioural disorders has introduced a number of “historic” changes such as

abolishment of diagnostic subcategories related to schizophrenia and personality disorders and

replaced them with dimensional approach to these two diagnostic groupings. A score of new psychiatric

diagnoses have been included in the classification and some of them are considered to be

“controversial” as they may represent “medicalisation” of normal human experience and behaviour.

This presentation will provide an overview of main changes and additions to ICD-11 and discus their

possible impact on the boundaries and future of psychiatry.
