Abstract:
There has been vast development of community psychiatric services in Hong Kong in the past 20 years. Early intervention service for first-episode psychosis(EASY) was first implemented as a territory-wide service by the Hospital Authority in 2001 to provide 2-year phase-specific service for people aged 15-25 years old with first-episode psychosis (FEP). This service marked the first comprehensive case management service developed for severe mental illness to enhance community support for patients with FEP. The EASY service was expanded in 2011 to provide 3-year phase-specific service for 15-25 years old as well and 25-64 years old, a first territory-wide early intervention service for FEP covering the whole adult population in the world. A territory-wide publicly funded Integrated Community Centre for Mental Wellness (ICCMW) programme was implemented in 2009 to provide multidisciplinary community support to patients with psychiatric conditions and their family members. This talk will share some of the results of studies regarding impact of this two key community psychiatric services on hospitalization, self-harm and suicide mortality over the last two decades using individual cohort data, summary population-based data and individual population-based data. The role of pandemic, socioeconomic changes and other mental health service development locally over this period on these outcomes will also be discussed.
