Abstract:
This presentation summarizes the recent findings of a series of the population-based cohort studies conducted in Hong Kong and a number of our meta-analyses systematically examining the association of SMI (schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and bipolar disorder) with risk of premature mortality, reduced life expectancy, physical comorbidity burden, temporal trends of differential mortality and suboptimal somatic treatment. Overall, our findings consistently indicate the persistent mortality gap between SMI and the general population in recent decades, highlighting an urgent need to adequately address such physical health inequalities so as to reduce preventable deaths and lifelong burden of poor physical-health among people with SMI.
